The weather, honestly
A winter you can sit outside in
January days sit around 15 to 17 degrees. Almond blossom in February, wildflowers in March. Most people find they simply stop owning a heavy coat.
Swimming to November
The sea reaches the high twenties by August and holds its warmth into the autumn. A normal swimming season runs from April to November, longer on the east coast.

€1,800 to €2,500 a month
What a couple spends living well: rent or bills, food, running a car, eating out regularly. Living quietly in a village, less. Living on the Kyrenia seafront, more.
Eating out is still normal
A full meze dinner for two with drinks costs a fraction of the equivalent in Spain or Italy. This is the single biggest change people notice in their monthly spending.
Produce is local and cheap
The island grows its own citrus, olives, vegetables and dairy. Buying at the weekly market rather than the supermarket changes the bill again.
The practical things
English gets you everywhere
A legacy of the British period. Doctors, lawyers, banks, restaurants and most shops operate in English without anyone thinking about it.
Driving on the left
Also British, along with three pin plugs. The island is small enough that nothing is more than a couple of hours away, and traffic barely exists outside Nicosia.
Healthcare
Private clinics and hospitals in every main town, at prices well below western Europe, and private cover is inexpensive. Many residents use private care as a matter of course.
