Students walking through a bright modern campus courtyard

Where families put their children.

This is the question that decides it for most families, and North Cyprus answers it better than its size suggests. English medium schooling runs from nursery to a university degree.

British curriculum

Several private colleges follow the English national curriculum through IGCSE and A level, teaching in English throughout. Children arriving mid education can usually continue without losing a year.

International and bilingual

Other schools run bilingual Turkish and English programmes, and some offer the International Baccalaureate. Class sizes are small by European standards.

Fees in perspective

Private schooling here costs a fraction of the equivalent in the UK or the Gulf. For a good many families this is the single line that makes the move add up.

University island

Higher education is one of the country's largest industries, and it is why English is everywhere and the towns stay young.

Around 100,000 students

Spread across more than a dozen universities, drawn from over a hundred countries. Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta and Near East University in Nicosia are the largest.

Taught in English

Most programmes are delivered in English and many hold international accreditation, with degrees recognised across a wide range of countries.

What it does to a town

Cafés open late, food is cheap, there is live music on a Tuesday, and the rental market never goes quiet. It is also the reason a two bedroom flat near a campus is a reliable investment.
